Character Name: Shindou Rom Canon: Mieruko-chan Character Age: No canon age (and he doesn't even appear to know exactly how old he is). He seems like he's probably somewhere in his late 20's to early 30's, judging by how much he and his mentor are shown to have aged between a flashback and present day, so I'll be playing him as 29-ish!
Info: He has a wiki entry here but it's pretty paltry and also outdated so here's my summary!
A painfully normal couple ended up with a terribly abnormal child. Born with the innate ability to the see the many, many, many horrifying ghosts and monsters that haunt the world, the couple's son very quickly proved himself to be strange -- gloomy, with a strange attitude, talking about things that made no sense to normal people and acting out in unusual ways. Though the couple made some attempt to fix things at first, all attempts at discipline failed, as did attempts to have the child diagnosed or cured of his odd behavior. Ultimately, it seems the couple abandoned their child, leaving him stranded alone in a decrepit apartment haunted by horrific ghosts.
It was Oka Towako -- a famous celebrity medium -- who came to his rescue, adding him to her cherished orphanage of troubled children, all of whom were gifted with spiritual awareness to varying degrees. She was quick to realize that the child's spiritual awareness was especially high, and, understanding that he would need proper guidance to not grow up twisted by his constant exposure to ghosts, she left the boy in the care of her most trusted apprentice -- the fortune teller Takeda Mitsue. Mitsue, who'd been gifted the stage name of "Godmother" by Towako -- was a brusque but ultimately caring woman, who used her spiritual awareness to help others and taught the child to do the same. Acknowledging the child as her official apprentice, she also gifted him his own stagename, which he would use exclusively going forth -- Shindou Rom. Unfortunately, it was that very altruistic nature Mitsue had nurtured in him that later led to tragedy. Still young and naive, Rom was allured to a dangerous, cursed shrine by a ghostly voice calling for his help; when he heeded the call, a terrible spirit swooped in to devour him. It was only Towako's swift intervention that saved his life, but in exchange, Towako herself was taken by the malevolent spirit and made into its underlings.
Many years have passed since that incident. Though the incident inevitably drove a rift between Mitsue and Rom, he remained on the right path, growing up to be a famous medium in his own right. Shindou Rom runs a (sigh) Youtube channel as "Enigma Syndrome," where he posts videos of his various encounters with spirits, alongside other trivial things like gaming streams. Most people don't believe he's a real medium, of course, considering him little more than a showy conman. But he has just enough of an audience that he can make a living requesting donations and superchats, selling merch and 'power items,' and running 'haunted spot tours' -- which double as testing grounds for the various tools he uses to actually ward off malevolent spirits. Though widely considered an "enigmatic star" or a "fucking weirdo" depending on who you ask, Rom simply does what he can to make a living while addressing the various terrible beings that haunt Tokyo. In a twist of good fortune, a recent encounter with a teenage girl with spiritual awareness on par with his did ultimately allow him to both rekindle his familial relationship with Mitsue, and also defeat the monster that had taken their shared mentor, freeing her spirit to be at peace. Though Rom continues his thankless work afterward, he at least does so with a slightly lighter heart and a little more willingness to work with others ... sometimes. Character Orientation: Pan!
Are you/this character open to an OT3?: Sure!
Personality:
+ Confident - Rom largely does not care about how other people view him, and will simply do what he thinks is necessary or right, which makes him pretty proactive and quick on his feet. + Clever - It's hard surviving while constantly battling with malevolent spirits. Rom's shown to be pretty observant and resourceful, able to blend traditional techniques with modern technology, and developing his own unique tools to fight his battles with. + Altruistic - Perhaps in part due to his own rough childhood, Rom has a huge soft spot for children, as well as anyone in need of help; he won't hesitate to make money off people gullible enough to buy his various anti-ghost trinkets, but he ultimately dedicates those funds and his abilities towards dealing with malicious beings and keeping people safe.
- Self-reliant - Again, perhaps in part due to a rough childhood, Rom is hugely reluctant to trust in or rely upon others; though this tendency's been slightly tempered by recent events, old habits are hard to break. - Socially maladjusted - Dude's fucking weird. Though not malicious or cruel, he does come across as a tactless and flippant, and most will immediately get the first impression that he's a skeevy conman. - Opaque - On top of being odd, he's also hard to read, both due to his generally secretive and self-reliant attitude, and because he's so often playing the part of the celebrity psychic. This generally causes a slew of problems, ranging from being regarded as a conman or a threat, to simply not being taken seriously. Any Additional Info: No need for special accommodations, but I will probably have to ask for some annoying clarifications about whether the setting would have any ghosts or spirits present ... Rom will generally let harmless ghosts slide by without bothering them, but he'll be more vigilant if it looks like anything more threatening might be lurking around. |
